The crackle of the ice under my feet as I walk through the city streets of New York remind me of my youth in Vermont. The slush on the pavement, seeping through my shoes, not conducive to the inclement weather, sends a chill up my spine. The sensation has me tightening the muscles in my neck which causes me to roll the kinks from my shoulders.
It doesn’t matter that it’s obvious I’m now an adult living outside of the Green Mountain State, my mind plays tricks on me and I’m stopped short as a memory of another time surfaces. I physically feel the alteration in my system, my waning confidence has me scanning the streets for a distraction. It’s only moments before one comes into view.
Fighting off my natural desire to approach the man who has caught my eye, I remind myself that this feeling will be fleeting. Another notch on my already scarred bedpost, not so much.
“Hey Court, wait up.”
Lost in my internal conflict, I hadn’t heard Ace Lyons at first.
“Where you rushing off to?” he yells.
Ace Lyons is the last person I need to be near right now. Well, maybe not the last, but wherever Ace was, the very last person I need to see, is never far behind.
Ace was recently released from basic training after being caught with his pants around his ankles and his dick inside his commanding officer’s wife. His father called in a favor with Mac, the head of security at my stepfather’s company, and that’s how our paths crossed.
Turning toward the guy that struggles with keeping his dick out of places it doesn’t belong, I also spot his partner in crime, Callan Black. Like I said, never far behind. And Callan is the man I don’t need to be near right now.
Callan Black is a strong, high-strung whiz on a computer. The Brainiac could hack into anywhere. Like Ace, his dick’s ability to hack into women’s panties is what my issue is at the moment. Lord knows he’s had the all-access ticket into mine since the day I first laid eyes on him. He keeps it secured in his pocket and pulls it out when he needs it. Yup, he’s an asshole.
Ace and Callan are always where the other one is. Always. So, I guess it’s appropriate that they like to take their women together.
Running into them right now is a recipe for a fucking disaster.
I heave in a gulp of air. Moving in their direction, I plaster on a fake smile. “Ace,” I greet with a gentle kiss to the corner of the mouth that has explored every inch of my body as much as it has my sister’s. “Callan,” I say without moving to offer him the same level of affection. He’s my poison and dangerous. I suspect Ace has it bad for my sister, so a kiss to the corner of his mouth isn’t going to hurt anyone. Callan Black and I, on the other hand, have history. It might be short, but our secret hook-ups are starting to fuck with my head. Callan claims he’s never had feelings for a woman, so why he’s picking now and me to fuck with is anyone’s guess. So, as I said, dangerous.
Callan cracks a smile, my kiss for Ace and lack of one for him has not gone unnoticed.
“I’m on my way out” I shiver as a gust of cold wind blows my hair into my face and I finally answer Ace’s question about my activities.
